LUCENA -- The Gilas Pilipinas team made up of PBA upstarts weren't fazed by their been-there, done-that opponents.
Without a veteran on its side to come to its rescue, the youthful men's national team that played here on Friday showed it could hang with a squad made up of champions, MVPs and veterans.
And beat them.
Unlike in the Cagayan de Oro leg in which Gilas had June Mar Fajardo and Terrence Romeo to lead them, the Gilas players here had no such option.
Despite the PBA all-stars going up by double digits in the 4th and numerous instances that showed their playful, cocky side, Gilas didn't lose its poise and kept its effort level high.
If this were a test of character for coach Chot Reyes' team, his players certainly passed with flying colors. The win was mere gravy.
Among the young guns that stood out were Grey, Tolomia, LA Revilla and Kevin Ferrer, who all scored in a 4th-quarter comeback that saw Gilas outscore the all-stars 37-17.
