MANILA -- University of the Philippines (UP) survived a virtual do-or-die match after grounding Philippine Air Force in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-10, to remain in contention, though barely, for the remaining semifinals seats in the 13th V-League Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The Lady Maroons closed its elimination round campaign with a 3-4 win-loss card and in the process officially gave Pocari Sweat (4-1) the second Final Four slot to join early semifinalist University of Santo Tomas (5-1).
UP’s win also pushed BaliPure (3-1) and Bureau of Customs (3-2) a win closer to clinching the remaining two semis slots. The two teams are shoo-ins for the last two Final Four tickets considering that they will still be facing the listless Philippine Coast Guard in their remaining games.
"Kung meant to be, eh ‘di, go," said UP skipper Kathy Bersola, who scored 12 points. "But either way may na-gain na naman kami from this experience so OK lang din kung makapasok kami or hindi for now and ayun looking forward na lang to the next one."
Diana Carlos led the Lady Maroons with 14 points with 11 coming off kills and three kill blocks while Nicole Tiamzon got 11. Isa Molde pounded eight attacks for a total of nine points for the Diliman-based squad.
Air Force fell to 2-4 slate tied with Laoag. The Lady Jet Spikers will close the elims against BoC on Saturday.
Joy Cases finished with six points while Judy Ann Caballejo, Jocemer Tapic and Mae Antipuesto all had four markers for Air Force.
