MANILA, Philippines – Star guard Allein Maliksi has been called up to the Gilas Pilipinas national team on Tuesday, after teammate Paul Lee was revealed to be suffering from a knee injury.

Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes made the announcement during the first day of the national team's training camp in Tagaytay.

"Paul Lee has a meniscal tear, and his injury is being managed on a daily basis. So we have decided to replace him, for now, with Allein Maliksi," he revealed.

Also missing the camp are San Miguel's June Mar Fajardo and Ginebra's Japeth Aguilar, who are still recovering from their long stints in the PBA Philippine Cup. GlobalPort's Terrence Romeo also skipped the camp due to illness.

The three-day camp serves two purposes: first, it gives Reyes the opportunity to introduce the system that he wants, and second, it marks the start of the team-building process.

"I've always said, from Day 1, that we are building the best team," Reyes said in his address to the players, livestream by Sports 5.

"We're not assembling the best collection of players. We're building the best team."
