PBA: Star, GlobalPort bank on torrid shooting as quarterfinals begin

The PBA Philippine Cup opens its quarterfinal phase with a pair of best-of-3 series at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday.

Star looks to continue its winning ways when it takes on Phoenix at 5:15 p.m., after the TNT-GlobalPort game at 3 p.m.

Star has been stellar in the last 3 weeks, averaging 110.7 points and limiting their opponents to 83 to win 4 straight.

Star head coach Chito Victolero said: “Actually, our chemistry has been good. Our confidence is on a high. One more thing going our way is that we’re pulling ourselves up and we’re not dragging ourselves down.”

One of the teams Star blew out in the elimination round was Phoenix, which the Hotshots routed 123-79 on December 10.

While that victory helped to galvanize Star, the decisive loss forced Phoenix to soul-search.

But that defeat seemed to ignite something inside the Fuel Masters, who won 4 of their last 6 games to barge into the quarterfinals.

In the second game, GlobalPort will try to flip the script when it meets TNT.

When the two met on January 25, TNT overcame a furious fightback by GlobalPort to win 102-98.

Terrence Romeo has been virtually unguardable in GlobalPort's last 2 games. He lit up TNT for 35 points, then went on to torch Rain Or Shine for a career-high 44.

Despite losing, GlobalPort head coach Franz Pumaren said he liked what he saw in his players against TNT.

“The game against TNT proved something about our character,” he said.
