MANILA — Jayvee Casio helped Alaska beat Rain Or Shine 94-89 at Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City on Wednesday to secure the No. 2 seed in the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
Casio connected on 5 of 6 3-point attempts and scored on several crucial plays in the 4th quarter, as Alaska erased a 5-point deficit after 3 quarters and handed Rain Or Shine it's 4th straight loss.
Alaska and Star finished the elimination round with identical 7-4 records but, because Alaska beat Star in their lone game on January 11, the Aces claimed the No. 2 seed and a twice-to-beat advantage.
"They made runs, they exposed our bad rotations . . . In the last few minutes, we defended really well."
Alaska's win came with a price though. JP Mendoza had to be stretchered out after a bad fall following a collision with Rain Or Shine's Jericho Cruz.
"I think JP Mendoza's gonna be OK . . . I just got a little bit scared," said Compton.
Vic Manuel and Sonny Thoss had 13 points each for Alaska.
Gabe Norwood and James Yap led the way for Rain Or Shine with 16 points.
Rain or Shine fell to 5-6 and will have to face Blackwater in a do-or-die playoff for the 8th and last berth in the Final 8.
Alaska will battle Barangay Ginebra in the next round.
“It’s great we have the twice to beat, but it’s not an advantage to have Ginebra as an opponent,” said Compton.
