MANILA, Philippines — The presence of Ginebra legend Robert "Sonny" Jaworski always serves to inspire the Gin Kings, but at Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday, the "Big J" tried to keep the team on an even keel following its Game 7 win against Star in the Philippine Cup semifinals.
Jaworski made his entrance during halftime of the do-or-die game, and in between taking pictures, signing autographs and greeting fans, he watched as Ginebra came away with an 89-76 victory over the Hotshots to advance to the finals.
After the game, while coach Tim Cone talked to reporters, it was Jaworski who first addressed the Ginebra players in the dugout to remind them: "They haven't achieved anything yet."
"You got to work hard, prepare, think of who your opponent is, and analyze whatever you're lacking," Jaworski later told reporters of his message to them. "Look at their strong points, and work against that.
"It's the desire for the game."
Jaworski told the Gin Kings that winning Game 7 is still just the first step.
"There's still so many steps that you got to do," he stressed.
This is not the first time that Jaworski gave an inspirational message to the Gin Kings. He memorably addressed them during halftime of Game 6 of the 2016 Governors' Cup Finals – a contest they went on to win at the buzzer to finally snap a title drought that spanned eight seasons.
