Asking netizens to vote for his next opponent may backfire on Pacquiao: analyst

The poll recently put on Twitter by Manny Pacquiao's camp could turn out to be counterproductive from a business perspective, according to a fight analyst.

Dennis Principe, a veteran boxing multiplatform expert, said the poll asking fans to pick Pacquiao’s next opponent could put the world champion at a disadvantage when negotiations for the actual fight get underway.

The poll asked fans who they want Pacquiao to fight in the United Arab Emirates. Amir Khan won by collaring 48% of the votes while Jeff Horn, who has been in talks with Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum, received only 7%.

If Pacquiao's camp thinks this will force Horn to lower his asking price, a paying public that expects Pacquiao to take on a bigger name may be turned off by a fight that features an opponent who comes in cheap.

“Now if it's a ploy na babaan ang leverage ni Horn, it may work pero at the back of the public's mind, ‘Wala itong si Horn.’ Kumbaga ‘Ba't ko ito papanoorin, sa survey he's the least preferred foe?’ ”

Principe said that it would be better if Pacquiao’s camp worked more discreetly.

“Maghanap sila ng other ways para malaman kung sino'ng most marketable. They can give an offer na hindi naman sila mama-max out,” he said.

“Both ways, (the poll) will be a drawback sa business aspect nung negotiations.”

Boxing promoter Bob Arum has previously announced Horn as Pacquiao’s opponent in a WBO welterweight title defense on April 23 in Brisbane.

But Pacquiao later clarified that he is still in negotiations with Horn.

Pacquiao's associate, Michael Koncz, later claimed that they have reached a deal to stage Pacquiao’s next fight in the UAE.
