MANILA — Down two key personnel, it looked as if Phoenix was headed for another blowout loss.
The new kid on the block wasn't going to let that happen.
Rookie Matthew Wright scored 17 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and Phoenix rallied from 12 points down to beat Meralco 94-90 in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Wednesday.
Phoenix coach Ariel Vanguardia was relieved to get a win after losing their two previous games by an average margin of 31 points
Vanguardia was without JC Intal (rib) and Willie Wilson (amoebiasis), making the victory all the more sweet.
"It's like sleepless nights for all of us. Halfway point (of the season) we're 2-3, we're not out. On our sixth game, I told them let's just start 0-0," Vanguardia said.
Mark Borboran chipped in 17 points, while Baguio had 11 for Phoenix which upped its record to 3-3.
Rookie Jonathan Grey finished with 24 points to lead Meralco, which fell to 2-3.
