Blackwater knew what it was getting when it drafted Mac Belo.
Now that investment is paying dividends for a franchise looking to reverse its fortunes.
Belo emerged as the top rookie based on statistical points calculated through the first half of the PBA Philippine Cup.
The former UAAP MVP is averaging 17 points and 7.6 rebounds for a total 33 statistical points to lead all first-year players.
That sum is good for fifth place overall in the best player of the conference race.
"Everybody knows the kid's talented," Chris Newsome said just after Belo dropped 25 points on Newsome and Meralco in a Blackwater win on November 27.
"He's made tremendous strides in his game. It's a great feat for him, and he's got a great future in front of him."
Part of the computation for statistical points is the "won games bonus" and Blackwater's success as a team has boosted Belo's total.
Blackwater had never won more than 3 games in six conferences since its inception. With Belo leading the way, the Elite have surpassed that total this tournament, where they're at 4-3.
Rounding out the top five are Phoenix swingman Matthew Wright (30.2 statistical points), Star point guard Jio Jalalon (24), Alaska forward Carl Bryan Cruz (19.2), and Phoenix guard Gelo Alolino (16.9).
