MANILA, Philippines — Bureau of Customs nearly squandered a two-set advantage but regained its form in the decider to defeat BaliPure in five sets and claim the last finals berth in the V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference on Wednesday at the Philsports Arena in San Juan City.
Alyssa Valdez and Thai import Kanjana Kuthaisong shone in the final frame of Customs' 25-21, 25-16, 24-26, 8-25, 15-8 victory, setting a date with Pocari Sweat for the championship.
Kanjana and Valdez had three kills each as Customs roared to an early lead in the fifth. The gap ballooned to 11-3, before Rose Vargas and Lilet Mabbayad fired the final two kills of the game to finish off the Water Defenders.
But the Transformers came out firing in the fifth set, surging to a 7-2 advantage behind Valdez.
BaliPure was able to make it a five-point game, 12-7, but Vargas' down-the-line hit and Mabbayad's quick kill at the middle ended a long rally to secure the win for Customs.
Kanjana finished with 20 points on 17 attacks, while Valdez had 16 points and 15 receptions. Vargas had 13 points and Mabbayad finished with 10 markers, including two aces.
BaliPure import Katherine Morrell led all scorers with 24 points, but Customs tallied a whopping 54-41 advantage on spikes that negated the Water Defenders' 11-6 advantage on blocking. Amy Ahomiro was the only other BaliPure player in double-digits, with 10 points.
Game 1 of Customs' best-of-three showdown with Pocari Sweat is set for Saturday. The Lady Warriors are seeking a second straight V-League title after ruling the Open Conference earlier in the season.
Meanwhile, Air Force outdueled Cignal in Game 1 of the Spikers' Turf Season 2 Third Conference Finals, 23-25, 19-25, 25-19, 27-25, 15-12, to move to within a win of securing the championship.
