MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila took care of business by fending off a spirited challenge by University of Santo Tomas to win 74-64 in UAAP men’s basketball.

The Blue Eagles, who remained in the hunt for a twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four, got a big boost from George Go and Mark Nieto.

The two conspired for a 12-5 run that closed out the Growling Tigers in the fourth quarter.

Nieto chipped in 13 points, while Manuel Tolentino had 11.

Ateneo’s victory, its ninth in 13 games, ruined Louie Vigil’s farewell game for the Growling Tigers, who bowed out with a 3-11 record.

Vigil paced the Tigers with 14 points.

The Eagles now occupy solo second behind archrival De La Salle (12-1) and ahead of defending champion Far Eastern University (8-4).
