MANILA, Philippines – The 42nd season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) officially opened on Sunday with all 12 teams welcoming the brand new year with high hopes.
PBA chairman Mikee Romero officially declared the season open after the teams paraded one by one onto the court, accompanied by their respective muses.
Bb. Pilipinas Universe Maxine Medina led the traditional parade of beauties as the muse of the Meralco Bolts, the runners-up of the season-ending Governors' Cup.
The other beauty queens were: Miss Global Englnad 2015 Sophia Rankin (Mahindra), Mutya ng Pilipinas Miss Tourism International Justine Mae San Jose (Rain or Shine), Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa (Star), and Bb. Pilipinas 1st Runner-Up Angelica Alita.
Filipina girl group 4th Impact, best known for their stint in "The X-Factor UK," sang the national anthem, while Ginebra veteran J-Jay Helterbrand led the invocation.
In his opening remarks, PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa touted the growth made by the league last year, as well as their renewed partnership with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and the creation of an official PBA app.
The All-Filipino Cup officially opens with a game between defending champion San Miguel and the retooled Star Hotshots.
