MANILA – After back-to-back losses wherein they failed to win even a single set, the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons had a series of discussions with their head coach, Jerry Yee, to clear the air and figure out their problems.
Coming off back-to-back straight-sets losses to University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Pocari Sweat, the Lady Maroons played with more fluidity and rhythm en route to a four-set victory over Team Laoag on Monday.
Asked what change in the game against Laoag, Yee said: "We've been discussing kung ano ang mga struggles namin."
"Pinag-usapan namin na hindi naman sinabing bawal magkamali, kasi kung hindi ka magkakamali, 'di ka naman matututo," he added. "So we were trying to explain na, kumbaga, 'wag i-pressure masyado ang sarili."
Yee revealed that prior to Monday's game, they had three separate talks to clear the air with players and "discuss some issues." As a result, the Lady Maroons were more composed and quick to make up for their errors.
The veteran Tiamzon epitomized this. After committing an attack error late in Set 4, she responded with back-to-back hits that brought UP to match point. An attack error by Jema Galanza completed the win – UP's second in the conference.
"Parang positive naman (ang response), if this game is an indicator," said Yee. "So thankful kami."
"Before kasi, parang pag nagkakamali, naiinis na sa sarili or naiinis sa teammates," he explained. "But that's part of it. That's part of the growth. Buti ngayon, pinagdadaanan namin, and hopefully, may time pa kami na matuto."
