MANILA, Philippines – Nearly all foreign players have checked in ahead of the opening day of the 2016 Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix on Saturday at the Arena in San Juan.
Lynda Morales, Puerto Rico's captain in the recent Rio Olympics, banners a strong cast of imports in the inter-club tournament. She will be partnering with 6-foot-5 Laura Schaudt for Cignal, which has been tabbed as the team to beat in the upcoming Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, Petron will parade the high-flying Stephanie Niemer and Serena Warner of the United States, while defending champion Foton brought back Lindsay Stalzer and Ariel Usher to anchor their title defense.
RC Cola-Army, meanwhile, will have former US juniors national team member Kierra Host and Hailie Ripley as their reinforcements.
F2 Logistics successfully secured the services of Sydney Kemper and another former US juniors national team member Hayley Dora Spelman, who dazzled the local fans when she starred for Altay VC of Kazakhstan in the AVC Asian Women's Club Championship at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan City recently.
"All other imports are ready to go," said PSL president Ramon Suzara, who stressed that they have successfully completed the International Transfer Certificates (ITC) of all imports.
"We started working on their transfer certificates as early as two months ago," he said. "That's why we didn't have any trouble registering them to the FIVB system."
"We're expecting a trouble-free staging of our import-flavored conference."
The tournament opens with Generika and Petron facing off in the opening match at 12:30 p.m., while Foton will kick off its title retention campaign against the dangerous F2 Logistics at 3 p.m.
A simple opening ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m.
