Barangay Ginebra wants to end the drought and it wants to end it tonight.

Following back-to-back victories in Games 4 and 5, the Gin Kings will be going for the kill against the Meralco Bolts in Game 6 of their best-of-seven PBA Governors’ Cup Finals to put an end to a title drought that began eight years ago.

“We put our best game of the series together in Game 5 and now our challenge is to follow it up and not give the momentum back to Meralco,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone, whose wards lead the series 3-2, said in the PBA website.

“We expect a big fight back by them. They’ve been an incredibly resilient team all conference long,” he said.

“It’s one thing if you’re playing a lesser team and they had their backs to the wall, you can kind of overcome them,” added Cone. “But a great team with their backs to the wall – it’s really hard to beat.”

The game begins at 7 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum.

Meralco coach Norman Black knows the work is cut out for them.

“It’s do or die so we must get off to a good start and match the energy of Ginebra right from the jump ball. At this point it’s about who wants it the most so we have to play the type of basketball that got us this far in the tournament. We must play our basketball now,” he said.

If Ginebra takes the crown Friday night, they will be able to tie Toyota’s record of nine championships, which is the fifth best in the league. Topping the list is San Miguel Beer (22), Alaska Milk (14) and Crispa and Star (13).

Cone’s main concern is their tendency to lose their lead.

“It’s the first time we’re in the lead in the series. But we’re not good at holding leads in the whole series,” he said.

Cone added that if they’re looking for the best time to finish Meralco, it should be tonight.

“They’re gonna be totally focused and concentrated, and we’re just gonna see if we can meet their intensity.”
