San Miguel Beer superstar June Mar Fajardo nabbed his third PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award on Friday night to become the first PBA cager to win the honor three consecutive times.
Despite failing to steer the Beermen to the Finals of the PBA Governors’ Cup, Fajardo bested his rivals by averaging 19.73 points, 12.21 rebounds, and 1.38 blocks this season.
“Hindi ko akalain na makakakuha ako ng MVP award, then tatlo pa,” said the humble Cebuano in an interview after the awarding ceremony.
Chris Newsome of Meralco, meanwhile, won the 2016 Rookie of the Year award.
Aside from winning his third MVP plum, Fajardo also took home the Samboy Lim Sportsmanship award and was named in this year’s Mythical Five.
Other players in the Mythical list are fellow MVP candidates TNT’s Jayson Castro and Alaska’s Calvin Abueva, Globalport’s Terrence Romeo, and Fajardo's San Miguel teammate Arwind Santos.
Fajardo is now tied with PBA legend Bogs Adornado for having the most number of MVP awards.
The Beerman, however, admitted that the MVP award would have been sweeter if they made it to the Governors’ Cup Finals.
“Mabigat man sa loob na hndi kami makapasok sa finals, pero ganun talaga ang buhay sa basketbol may mananalo may matatalo. Marami pa naming conference, kelangan pa naming galingan,” he said.
