LOS ANGELES -- Edgar Sosa is a former world champion with a 52-9 win-loss record. He has faced some of the world’s top small fighters, including current pound for pound king Roman Gonzales.
Sosa said he is ready for his next big challenge, which would be the Philippines’ Donnie “Ahas” Nietes.
They will be the main event for this Saturday's Pinoy Pride 38: Philippines versus Mexico at the Stub Hub center in Carson California.
The former world champion is no stranger to Filipino fighters. In his career, he has fought six Filipinos.
He captured the world light flyweight title by beating Brian Viloria in 2007. After 10 successful defenses over a two-and-a-half-year span, he lost the belt to Rodel Mayol in his only defeat to a Filipino fighter.
“They're very physically strong, they're really fast with maneuvers with the hands,” Sosa said of his Filipino foes.
“Manny Pacquiao, I think he started a rivalry between the Philippine fighters and the Mexican fighters so from that point on there's been a lot of excitement around that.”
Across the room, Ramiro "Zurdo" Robles, a 23-year-old with a record of 13-5-1 also spoke with with the media.
Robles is a last-minute substitute opponent for Mark Magsayo, an undefeated featherweight believed to be the next big name in Filipino boxing.
Magsayo's original opponent Ruben Garcia has pulled out of the match due to injuries.
“We've been doing all our work we've been preparing that's why we took this fight on,” said Robles through a translator.
“You have to be ready because when you come to the states you face all different kinds of fighters so you just have to be ready.”
While the two Mexican headliners faced off with the media, the third Mexican fighter Juan Jimenez, who will face off with Arthur Villanueva, was doing his pre-fight medical check ups.
